Hobart is small enough to know its customers by name and ambitious enough to outgrow that model.

Tasmania's tourism sector is growing faster than the state average across jobs, gross state product contribution and gross value added, with visitors spending $3.71 billion in the state and tourism contributing more than $4.5 billion to gross state product through direct and flow-on effects. Much of that activity runs through Hobart, where precincts like Salamanca Place (home to Australia's largest outdoor market every Saturday) anchor a hospitality and retail economy built on foot traffic from both residents and visitors.

Greater Hobart's small business base grew by 3% to 18,277 businesses, representing 44% of all small businesses in Tasmania, meaning almost half the state's small business activity is concentrated in and around this one city. At the same time, Tasmania's startup and innovation sector is actively working to diversify the economy beyond tourism, with organisations like Enterprize Tasmania backing a growing base of tech, food and beverage ventures that are trying to build a 'MONA effect' for the state's commercial sector, echoing the transformation the Museum of Old and New Art brought to Hobart's cultural profile since 2011.

That's a market that rewards a different kind of marketing to a big-city agency's default playbook: tight-knit enough that reputation and word of mouth still carry real weight, but growing a tourism and small business base large enough that showing up properly in local search and paid channels now makes a measurable difference.
